Historic Exhibition at Fetcham Park Brings Surrey’s Military Legacy to Life

Fetcham Park is delighted to extend its hosting of A Call to Arms: The History of the Surrey Yeomanry – a unique temporary exhibition of historic panels kindly loaned by Dorking Museum.

Following the recent success of the exhibition during Heritage Open Day, attended by over 400 visitors, Fetcham Park has replicated the original panels with help from local printers Dyers, to provide another opportunity to glimpse into the Surrey Yeomanry’s fascinating 18th-century origins, its involvement in the Boer War, and its service through World War I.

The display vividly brings to life the people and places associated with the esteemed military unit spanning two centuries, including Captain Sydney Thornhill Hankey, a relative of the original owners of Fetcham Park.

Kate Ainsworth, house manager at Fetcham Park, extends gratitude to those who helped bring this exhibition to life: “This project was a community effort. We’re incredibly thankful to our retired colleague Nick Yeomans and local historian Vivien White whose discovery of the Hankey family’s connection to the Surrey Yeomanry adds meaning to this event.

Our thanks go as well to Kathy Atherton, manager at Dorking Museum, and her team for their generosity in loaning the panels and to local printers Dyers, who thoughtfully translated the original artwork into the new banners for public access. Their contributions have been invaluable, and we’re thrilled to share this history with the community.”

The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular business hours (except lunch hours 12 p.m. -1 p.m.), Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., until December 23rd 2024. Visitors are encouraged to explore this rich piece of Surrey’s heritage amid the elegant surroundings of Fetcham Park.
