Hidden History Revealed at Fetcham Park Heritage Open Day, Sept. 11th, 2:30-5pm

An artist from Versailles, a royal architect, and a pioneering gardener – just some of the colourful characters that will be brought to life on Sunday 11th September when Fetcham Park opens its door for Heritage Open Days.

As part of England’s biggest heritage festival, our Grade II* listed house and gardens will be open to the public, free of charge, from 2:30pm – 5pm.

The Year of the English Garden

Coinciding with the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown, this year’s Heritage Open Days theme is the Year of the English Garden.

Thanks to local historian, Vivien White, the mystery of who designed the original gardens at Fetcham Park will be revealed at the Open Day, together with a detailed exhibition of her research.

During your visit, take a moment to step outside and meander through the tranquil gardens while you soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era.

Explore Fetcham Park for one afternoon only

Visitors will also have the chance to explore the Shell Room, Drawing Room and Salon, complete with elaborate plasterwork and decorative gold leaf. Marvel at original murals in the Great Hall by Louis Laguerre dating back to the early 1700s, and admire the grandeur of Surrey’s best kept secret.

Discover hidden history on your doorstep

Heritage Open Days will see 45,000 volunteers across the country donate their time over four days to celebrate England’s history, architecture and culture; offering people the chance to see hidden places and try new experiences.

Heritage Open Days patron, Loyd Grossman, explains: “Heritage Open Days and its army of volunteers play an important role in championing our wonderfully diverse local heritage, opening up doors and keeping access free for these very special four days every year. Don’t miss this once-a-year chance to be a tourist in your own town and treasure the treasures on your doorstep.”

Victoria Stanton, of Fetcham Park, is looking forward to showcasing the house and gardens to the wider community: “Although a popular business centre for over 15 years, Heritage Open Day is a chance for local people and families to explore some hidden history on their doorstep.

“Without Vivien White’s interest and research, we could not share the exciting discoveries that give the house and gardens further historical significance.”
