Christmas Advent – 24 of Our Favourite Local Businesses (Part I)

This Christmas, to embrace the spirit of community and shine a light on our local area’s unique and exciting offerings, we are sharing 24 of our favourite businesses that highlight the variety of products, services and talented individuals on our doorstep. Here is part one of our selection.

Christmas celebration at Fetcham Park catered by At Home

1). At Home

Event caterers At Home, based in Cobham, have been catering for distinctive events for over 40 years. Their knowledge and experience show, and coupled with their creativity, cooking and service, they really are a joy to work with. At Home’s strength is their personal touch. Every event at Fetcham Park has been designed for the individual, bringing something new and showstopping to the table every time. Whether it’s an intimate dinner party, a champagne and canape reception, or a traditional Afternoon Tea, it is always expertly executed with well-considered menus, excellent wine, and attentive, professional service.

2). The Fetcham Village Sign

The Fetcham Residents Association has won a bid from Mole Valley District Council worth almost £50,000 to construct two commemorative garden spaces in Fetcham village centre. The scheme put forward by the FRA includes the installation of a heritage village sign to be mounted on a 3-metre oak post close to the mini-roundabout next to Sainsbury’s. Most of the money is needed to pay for the landscaping work around the sign, and to transform a second area of overgrown land on the other side of the roundabout near Harringtons and Flowercraft.

It is also planned that at the base of the Village sign, there will be a pattern of red brick pavers. If you would like to sponsor one of the pavers, or buy it as a lasting present, you can have your name, or family name, engraved on it at a cost of £25. 3). KATI KAIA

KATI KAIA brings original abstract expressionist artworks with crafted and considered design to yoga products and accessories with its roots firmly in sustainability and eco-consciousness. Following over 15 years in the fashion industry, founder and creative director Kati Treble, travelled the world sourcing sustainable materials, techniques and inspiration. 4). Kingfisher Flower Shop

Beautiful freshly cut flowers with an emphasis on seasonal British grown blooms available to buy from the Kingfisher Flower Shop [link] in Abinger Hamer and a truly brilliant creative team who have worked many times at Fetcham Park for private dinners and events, including creating our gorgeous Christmas tree, door wreath and décor. Their designs and arrangements are exquisite and make a true statement. The ‘little flower shop with big ideas’ is a must-visit.

5). Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey

Fetcham-based Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey [link] is an ambitious charity offering a lifetime of support for people who are blind, vision impaired, Deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing. The charity has been supporting the community since 1922, providing specialist, hands-on, practical services tailored to their needs. Their aim is to inspire people to take the small steps today and achieve the breakthroughs tomorrow and lead full and independent lives.

To find out more about Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey, director Clare Burgess will be speaking at the Candlelit Carol Service at St. Mary’s Church, followed by refreshments at Fetcham Park, on Thursday 14th December, where donations to the retiring collection will be for the charity. 6). Mandira’s

Exceptional award-winning Indian cuisine where every dish creates has a personal story. After moving to the UK, business owner Mandira spent 17 years working as a management consultant. The lack of “proper” Indian food led her to decide to follow her heart and cook for a living, and Mandira’s Kitchen was born. Initially offering supper clubs and catering from the home kitchen, Mandira’s is now at a beautiful location overlooking the Silent Pool. As well as a place to eat, Mandira’s offer culinary experiences, cookery lessons, and event catering.

7). Bocketts Farm

Bocketts Farm Park is a working family farm in Fetcham run by the Gowing family who opened it in 1992. While there is plenty of family fun all year around, at Christmas the farm truly delights. There are festive themed crafts, activities and a chance to meet Father Christmas and his trusty elves. The gift shop features a lovely range of natural and wooden toys ideal for thoughtful and eco-conscious presents.

8). Wildflower Magazine

Wildflower Magazine is an independent, unique lifestyle title which celebrates life in the country. Published quarterly (February, May, August & October) by Fetcham Park based luxury contract publisher BlueStar Media, Wildflower covers a host of fascinating country lifestyle subjects, with contributions from respected writers and photographers. This thoughtful and beautifully presented magazine was established in 2018 by Zoe Levey and is full of rich photography reflecting the seasons. 9). Effingham Festival of Christmas on December 16th (10am-5pm)

The King George V Hall and Playing Fields will host a magnificent event combining the traditional school Fair of St. Lawrence School with Effingham’s Christmas Market alongside contributions from neighbours in the Bookhams, Horsleys and Fetcham. Effingham’s schools, churches and village organisations are all taking part promising a fantastically festive ensemble of stalls and entertainment. There will be music and carols with the lighting of the tree and, of course, Father Christmas will be meeting the children with his reindeer in the festive grotto. A festive food hall and bar will be open all-day for food and refreshments.

10). Miss Bush

Miss Bush in Ripley is a unique and luxurious boutique that has been at the forefront of British bridalwear fashion and service for over 35 years. Founded by Emma Meek-Marshall, Miss Bush has garnered a reputation as the destination ‘must visit’ boutique for brides ahead of the curve. Outstanding service, expertise and integrity, and a team that just ‘gets it’, Miss Bush is the best in the business.

Emma is a long-time collaborating partner with Fetcham Park, starting her association with the House in 2011. Over the years, Emma and her team regularly use the building and grounds as a place for inspiration and creativity for numerous campaigns, shoots and events including the 35th Anniversary of Miss Bush and in honour of a working relationship spanning 17 years, internationally renowned designer Jesus Peiro designed the “Chloe” gown, available exclusively at Miss Bush.

11). Vineyards of the Surrey Hills

On our doorstep we are surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Surrey Hills, home to five wonderful vineyards at the pinnacle of quality in the English wine industry: Albury Organic Vineyard, Chilworth Manor Vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate, Greyfriars Vineyard and High Clandon.

The award-winning Surrey Hills vineyards grow grapes on chalky lime and sandstone hills with the same geology as that of the Champagne region in France, and have won top international and national awards for our wines and wine tourism.

Each Surrey Hills vineyard has its own unique offering, with a variety of tours, tastings and experiences for visitors.

12). The Bell Pub

Situated in the heart of Fetcham Village, The Bell is a lovely, traditional British pub and restaurant with a warm and welcoming atmosphere and delicious food including Sunday lunch. There’s good Wi-Fi so it’s ideal for working lunches and only a short walk from Fetcham Park. For Christmas, there are a number for festive menus and dining packages for end of year corporate parties or get togethers with the team.
